Mediation is recognised as a major alternative dispute resolution procedure in Australia with a national Approval Standard for accreditation of Mediators and Practice Standards which came into effect on 1 January 2008.

Mediation is conducted in three broad regimes:

1. Private contractual appointment by the parties in dispute;
2. Industry Mediation Panels such as those operating in Film, Franchising, Horticulture, Oil, Produce and Grocery Industries;
3. Court referred Mediations under the Rules of the various Federal and State Courts.
